Ocean temperatures can change a great deal

The movie above shows the sea surface temperature of the Atlantic ocean over a period of five years. The temperatures range from nearly freezing (in purple) to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius, in red). Notice how the temperatures change over the course of a year. In summer the temperatures are higher in the northern hemisphere, while in winter the northern waters cool and the southern waters warm up. This cycle is quite evident throughout the five years shown in the movie.
