A movie of rainfall throughout the year

Click for Animation

The movie above shows the precipitation across the globe over the course of a year. The precipitation measurements were made from a satellite, allowing information to be gathered throughout the world at once. Using a satellite makes it easier to see the preciptiation in hard-to-reach areas, such as in the mountains and over the oceans. Information like this helps scientists to learn more about the weather and climate of the planet as a whole, and how one part of the world affects other parts. Here you can see that most of the rain falls in the tropics, near the equator. This is where many of the world's rainforests are located.
