Earth science picture of the day
|
This photo was taken inside the California Cavern. The many stalactites in this cavern are made of calcium carbonate (calcite) and are created over centuries by dripping water. As the water runs down from cracks in the ceiling, it deposits small amounts of the mineral. Eventually, these huge structures are formed. This picture one of many displayed at the Earth Science Picture of the Day website, where a variety of earth science topics are shown. (Explore the link in the "more info" button)
