Using historical data and models to show growth

Click for Animation

This animation shows the population growth in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland region from 1792 to 2100. The yellow-colored areas show populated areas derived from historical data and maps, up until the 1990s. The purple-shaded regions are areas that are model-generated predictions of where future growth may occur. Social and urban scientists develop population-growth models to help predict both social and physical impact of urban spread upon the landscape. City planners, government agencies, and business organizations, among other groups, are also interested in growth models for various uses.
