Viewing Australian fires from space
|
This image shows the plumes of smoke from the wildfires around Sydney, Australia. The image was taken by NASA's Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on January 2, 2002. The city of Sydney is the lighter-colored area located to the right of the lower group of fires. By the time this image was taken, approximately 1.24 million acres of bushland had been burned by more than a dozen separate fires. It is believed that many of the fires were set by arsonists.
