Determining land use

By combining IGBP gridded land cover data with state level census data on land use, scientists can create a map of estimated land use. This image is shown at half-degree spatial resolution. There is no information in this map on the spatial arrangement of land use within these 0.5 degree grid cells; the algorithm used to color each grid cell given its land-use values is arbitrary, but is consistently applied. This gives the "stripes" seen in some of the cells.
