Land modification maps

The false-color map above shows the amount of land modification (for example, clearing land for growing crops) that has occurred in each nation of the world. In this map, land modification indicates the fraction of the land in each nation that is used for urban settlement or permanent agriculture. Notice that nearly all of the land has been modified in the very densely populated nations of Europe and Southest Asia, as well as parts of Central America, western Africa, Japan, and Korea. Very little of the land has been changed in Africa and South America, which have a much lower population density.
