North American jet stream (250 mb winds)

This image shows the current winds high in the atmosphere above North America. These are the winds at a height where the air pressure has dropped to 250 mb (air pressure near the ground is normally around 1000 mb), and are called the jet stream. The wind speed is represented by the color and the direction by the streamlines. The direction of the wind is along the streamlines away from the ends with the barbs.
