Smoke plumes which spread from fires in Mexico in 1998, as observed by the TOMS instrument. Ultraviolet images at 331 and 360 nm are used to determine the amount of aerosol particles in the atmosphere. Serious health problems were reported from this smoke, even as far north as Oklahoma, particularly for those with preexisting lung or heart problems.
