Purchase an upgrade DVD for only $5 plus shipping.

UPDATING SKY TONIGHT AUTOMATICALLY (recommended)
NOTE: Windows Vista users may need to disable User Access Control (UAC)

  1. Launch SKY TONIGHT software.
  2. Select "UPDATE DATA" button
  3. Choose the latitude and year you wish to download and select "DOWNLOAD SKY DATA"
  4. Wait for new sky data files to complete their download. Your old sky data will be located in a SkyTonight/old_data/ directory.
NOTE: Downloading a full set of data (200MB+) can take a long time. If you need to quit the update, you can restart it later and complete the remainder of the download.

UPDATING SKY TONIGHT DATA MANUALLY (not recommended)

  1. Locate the SKY TONIGHT "data" directory in your Space Update software installation.
  2. Make a backup copy of your SKY TONIGHT "data" folder. Name it "old_data".
  3. In your original "data" folder, delete the README.txt file.
  4. In your original "data" folder, delete the 5 sky movies from the "5AM" folder and the 5 sky movies from the "8PM" folder. DO NOT DELETE the "5AM" and "8PM" folders.
  5. Point your browser to the updating directory http://earth.rice.edu/Space_Update/updating/skytonight/
  6. Choose the directory of data year you want from the listing (2008, 2009, 2010) and select the directory link.
  7. Choose the latitude you want from the listing (10N, 10S, 20N, 20S, 30N, 30S, 40N, 50N, 60N) and select its directory link
  8. Your browser should now be looking at a directory listing for the latitude you wish to download. It should show 3 items, a REAME.txt file, and 2 folders "5AM" and "8PM".
  9. Right-click (or control-click) the link for the XXX_YYYY_README.txt file and "Download Linked File As..." and save the file to the "SkyTonight:data" folder on your hard drive.
  10. Select the "5AM" folder link to view its contents on the server.
  11. Right-click (or control-click) the link for the each of the 5 5AM_X.mov movie files and "Download Linked File As..." and save the files to the "SkyTonight:data:5AM" folder on your hard drive.
  12. Select "BACK" on your browser window or click "Parent Directory" to go back up a directory level.
  13. Select the "8PM" folder link to view its contents on the server.
  14. Right-click (or control-click) the link for the each of the 5 8PM_X.mov movie files and "Download Linked File As..." and save the files to the "SkyTonight:data:8PM" folder on your hard drive.
  15. After all files have been downloaded, verify that your hard drive installation of SKY TONIGHT now has a "data" folder that contains the correct README.txt file for the year and latitude you wanted, and that the "5AM" and "8PM" folders each have 5 quicktime movies in them.
  16. Launch SKY TONIGHT and you should now be using your new data.
